“The Egyptian Magician” – Suspect rose from decorated boxer to suspected girl killer

STATEN ISLAND, NY – Kabary Salem, 52, male indicted by a grand jury on a murder charge in the case of his daughter, Ola Salem, had a long boxing career that included Olympic competitions.

Kabary Salem, of Block 280 of Deal Court in Rosebank, had been wanted for the murder of his daughter Ola Salem, 25, of Rosebank, according to the police. He was extradited to the United States in connection with the murder, Advance / SILive.com learned on Saturday evening.

24-year-old Kabary Salem fought for Egypt at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics as a light middleweight, online records show. Four years later, as a middleweight, he fought at 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics.

Kabary Salem, nicknamed “The Egyptian Magician”, then turned professional. He maintained a 23-5 record which spanned from 1997 to 2005, according to BoxRec.com, a site that traces the careers of professional boxers.

Kabary Salem recorded 12 knockouts, BoxRec shows, including an infamous 1999 fight against Randy Carver.

Carver, 24 at the time, died on September 14 – two days after being knocked down in a North American Boxing Federation bout by Kabary Salem.

Carver was knocked down to the mat after Salem’s overhand right in the 10th round, but the fallen boxer’s family said Salem used “frequent and repeated head shots” in the fight, the Associated Press reported at the time. The referee in the bout ruled that the headshots were accidental.

His career ended after suffering a TKO loss to Lucian Bute at the Belle Center in Montreal in September 2005.

After an active investigation, Salem was arrested on Friday, police said. Authorities said they found Kabary Salem in Kuwait. Information on Kabary Salem’s lawyer was not immediately available.

On an Instagram account listed as “the official Instagram of former world champion Kabary Salem”, a post posted on March 31, 2020, features Kabary Salem and Ola Salem with the caption, “I miss you and I love you tear off my love ola Kabary Salem.

Ola Salem was found by a passerby in Bloomingdale Park on October 24, 2019. The city’s forensic scientist called his death a homicide.

A source said she was strangled and died of asphyxiation from some kind of neck compression.

In an interview with the New York Times just over a week after her body was discovered, Kabary Salem said his daughter feared being chased by another vehicle on the highway.

“She always said someone would follow her,” he said.

Several Deal Court residents – who wished to remain anonymous – said they had seen police respond at the house before. They said there were “some problems” at the scene, including at least one incident in which they believed Salem had been taken away by an ambulance.

The NYPD had previously confirmed that officers had been called to Salem’s home in Deal Court on five occasions over the past year, for reasons such as a violation of a protection order and criminal contempt.

Ola Salem was an advocate for women victims of domestic violence, volunteering at the Asiyah Women’s Center.
